Of the two vehicles, the Subaru Outback is larger—it’s classed as a “midsize crossover,” as opposed to the Forester’s “compact crossover” designation. Due to its 4-inch-longer wheelbase, the Outback offers a smoother ride out of the gate, though the Subaru Forester's higher profile allows for better visibility in traffic.

For hauling a lot of gear, the Subaru Forester’s taller trunk configuration allows for a few extra cubic feet of space. They have nearly the same amount of space for up to five passengers, though the Forester has a little more legroom in the back. Though both vehicles have comfortable seating options, and the 2021 Outback is longer and wider, the Subaru Forester might be better if you’re regularly carting kids or a lot of stuff.

Power & Capability

Both the Subaru Outback and Forester come standard with the same 2.5L DOHC Subaru BOXER® engine, providing up to 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with the continuously variable transmission, all-wheel drive, and Subaru X-MODE® on every Outback model and all Foresters but the base, these Subarus drive great both on and off the road.

However, only the Subaru Outback features an available Turbocharged engine option with a high-torque transmission. If you find yourself regularly gunning around traffic, up hills, or towing up to 3,500 pounds, the Outback might be a better bet for your lifestyle.
